As a former Civilian Aide to the Secretary, Sean is proud and grateful to
have been able to participate in the long-standing Army coin tradition.
To that end, he is proud to have designed his coin.
The obverse (front) of the coin has a green background to signify Sean's Irish heritage. The area Sean represents is indicated by a star for Los Angeles in the outline of the state of California. The Bear is both the symbol of the state and the mascot for the UCLA Bruins sports teams. The eagle with olive branch and arrows in its talons are the obverse of the Great Seal of the United States.
The reverse of the coin has symbols of personal significance to Sean.
A destroyer escort represents the two ships on which John Duke (Sean's grandfather) served in WW II (Atlantic and Pacific Theaters): the USS Barr and the USS Riley.
The paratroopers' emblem is for Sergeant First Class Michael Ray Pearce, who is married to Sean's mother Patty Duke. He was serving at Ft. Benning, Georgia and she was there on location filming A Time to Triumph when they met.
The boots belonged to the grandfather of Sean's wife Christine: Frank Joseph Harrell served in the army during WW II beaches of Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge.
The Cobra helicopter is for Sean's friend Todd Weiler, former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Reserve Affairs Readiness Mobilization and Training, who put Sean's name forward to Togo West Jr., then Secretary of the Army.
The masks represent Tragedy and Comedy, the art of acting.
