In his capacity as a member of the President's Council on Service &
Civic Participation, Sean made a field report to the White House regarding
local efforts to organize a "Relief Effort Caravan" for Hurricane Katrina
Evacuees. Here's an excerpt from his report:
Well it is a Great Picture. These Citizens have
cobbled together an impressive few city blocks of supplies and are
waiting for their promised semi's to arrive...They are working with the
United Way in Louisiana, but the story isn't over.
The local police are now offering support to the
operation. One Officer gave me the name and number of a Nation Wide
Trucking company that would likely be receptive to an invitation to
participate. As yet, no one has solicited them.
Emotions are high about the President from one
of the organizers, a former Armed Services guy from Texas-who says he
voted for the President. He's not a fan.
What they've accomplished in my opinion is
newsworthy. I'm concerned that they are exhausted from several days and
nights without sleep.
I've been in contact with the City of Los
Angeles, to offer a heads up. I've further made an offer to the Mayor's
Office...I suggested to his staff that he applaud their efforts, but to
exercise caution when conducting such an impromptu operation.
Sean stopped everything in his life last
Friday to focus exclusively day and night all through the labor day
weekend to assist with this disaster. He is still actively engaged today
in following through with supplies that were collected locally in Los
Angeles for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
Sean Stopped by the "Impromptu Distribution Site" adjacent to the Van
Nuys Airport to inspect the efforts organized by bellapooch.com and
"Puppies, Babies & Mommies Too" in conjuncton with CraigsList.com for
Hurrican Katriana evacuees.

"Based on the series of good conversations I had with them and on
Mack's good report, I felt the need to inspect the site personally.
I was a bit concerned because I knew the citizens were not being directed
by the authorities. I was pleased with what I saw, but urged caution
and emphasized the need for sleep...they were a wonderful display of
positive energy, I just didn't want to see them have an accident.
"I was relieved to see the Van Nuys Police department arrive on site
with a very supportive attitude! I continued to stay in
communication with the organizers and was happy to learn and am happy to
report that two separate convoys filled with supplies, the first with
three semi trucks, the second presumably had the same number headed for
Louisiana working in concert with the United Way."
Between 2-4pm PST today a three truck convoy of semi's should be
arriving at 7635 Airport Business Parkway in Van Nuys. Any Help You
Could Offer To Secure, Deliver and Gift/Loan the following items to this
impromptu volunteer location would be greatly appreciated: FYI: The Van
Nuys Home Depot has already generously donated many pallets and other
goods to be used. In order to complete their task, they still require the
following:
- Pallet
- Jacks
- Fork Lifts
- Shrink Wrap
- Rolls of Tape
- Boxes
While he's never met and does not know them, Sean has had good
communications with the folks/Citizens who worked very quickly and
persistently to "make it happen" in the absence of being able to reach a
Local Red Cross Distribution Site from Friday through the Holiday on
Monday.
