Short Bio

Sean Astin is a husband, father, actor, producer, director, public speaker, and activist whose career has spanned more than four decades across film, television, voice acting, and theater. He is best known for his iconic performances as Mikey Walsh in The Goonies, the title role in Rudy, Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and Bob Newby in Stranger Things. In addition to his on-screen work, Sean has voiced beloved characters in numerous animated series and films, including Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the title role in Special Agent Oso. In 2024, he made his Broadway debut in Elf the Musical, playing Santa Claus. Beyond entertainment, Sean is an advocate for civic engagement, literacy, mental health awareness, and public service. He shares three daughters (Ali, Elizabeth, and Isabella) with his wife of 33 years, producer Christine Astin. Sean serves as president of the Screen Actors Guild, elected in 2025. His latest projects include: Chili Finger (2026) opposite Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, and Judy Greer, Matter of Time (2025) opposite his real-life daughter Ali Astin, and playing charming and down-to-earth Tyler in the final seasons of ABC'sThe Conners (2025).

Biography

Sean Astin has built one of the most enduring and recognizable careers in modern entertainment, with acclaimed work spanning film, television, voice acting, theater, directing, and public advocacy. Across more than forty years onscreen, he has become known for portraying characters defined by resilience, loyalty, optimism, and emotional sincerity.

 

Sean first captured audiences’ attention as Mikey Walsh in Steven Spielberg’s beloved adventure classic The Goonies. He went on to establish himself as one of Hollywood’s most memorable young actors with standout performances in films including Toy Soldiers, Memphis Belle, and the inspirational sports drama Rudy, in which he portrayed underdog football player Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger.

 

A major turning point in Sean’s career came with his portrayal of Samwise "Sam" Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed The Lord of the Rings trilogy. His performance as Frodo’s fiercely devoted companion became one of the emotional anchors of the series and earned him widespread critical recognition, including a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor and multiple ensemble honors alongside the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

 

Sean has continued to work steadily across television and streaming, appearing in series including 24, The Strain, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Big Bang Theory, Perry Mason, and The Conners. In 2017, he joined the cast of Netflix’s Stranger Things as Bob Newby, quickly becoming a fan favorite.

 

His extensive voice acting career includes starring roles in animated series such as Special Agent Oso and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as narration work for documentaries, audiobooks, and family programming. He has also lent his voice to numerous video games, animated films, and audio dramas.In recent years, Sean has expanded his work into theater and live performance including Bang! Bang! and Shostakovich and the Black Monk. In 2024, he made his Broadway debut in Elf the Musical, portraying both Santa Claus and Mr. Greenway at the Marquis Theatre in New York City.

 

Behind the camera, Sean directed and co-produced the Academy Award-nominated short film Kangaroo Court alongside his wife, Christine Astin. His short film The Long and Short of It was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival. Sean has also directed episodic television (Jeremiah, Angel, Perversions of Science) and produced documentary and independent film projects (Playing with Power The Nintendo Story, Remember the Sultana, Unlocked: The World of Games Revealed)

 

Outside the entertainment industry, Sean has long been active in civic engagement and public service. He has served in presidential appointments focused on volunteerism and military family support, worked extensively with nonprofit organizations, and advocated publicly for literacy, mental health awareness, climate action, and democratic participation. Sean was elected President of the Screen Actor's Guild, SAG-AFTRA, in 2025.

A sought-after public speaker, Sean has delivered keynote addresses and lectures on topics including mental health awareness, civic engagement, storytelling, leadership, and perseverance. In 2024, he delivered the commencement addresses for both University of California, Los Angeles and American University. Drawing from five decades of experience in entertainment, labor leadership, advocacy, and endurance athletics, Sean speaks at universities, nonprofit organizations, industry conferences, and public forums across the country.

 

An accomplished endurance athlete, Sean completed the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, and has run 13 marathons, including the Boston Marathon and the Los Angeles Marathon. Sean and his wife Christine graduated together from University of California, Los Angeles with degrees in History and English and Sean later earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Policy from American University.
